RAE 7650 objectives and syllabus

Note:-

The examination objectives describe in general terms the topics covered by the examination questions, and the syllabus states the subject matter to which they relate.

This syllabus will be examined in paper 7650, which will contain 80 multiple-choice questions (see Appendix A). Notes for guidance on the interpretation of the syllabus are included as Appendix B.

A copy of the Schedule to the Amateur Licence will be supplied to candidates for reference during the examination.

Each objective should be prefixed with the words 'On completion of the preparation for the examination, the candidate will be able to...'

 

1 Licensing conditions

Examination objectives

1.1 Name the types and state the purposes of Amateur Radio Licences available. State the qualifications necessary to hold a licence.

1.2 State the conditions of the Amateur Radio Licences (A) and (B), and show a knowledge of the Terms, Provisions and Limitations Booklet BR68 including the notes.

1.3 Interpret the Schedule and identify the bands, power and types of transmission permitted for the Amateur Service and Amateur Satellite Service.

Syllabus

1.1 Types of licence available and the qualifications necessary.

1.2 Terms, provisions and limitations for the Amateur Radio Licences (A) and (B), including a knowledge of Booklet BR68, including the notes appended.

1.3 Schedule of frequency bands, power and types of transmission available to the Amateur Service and Amateur Satellite Service.

 

2 Operating procedures and practices

Examination objectives

2.1 Describe operating procedures in telegraphy, telephony and digital communications.

2.2 Demonstrate knowledge of maintaining a log.

2.3 For satellites and repeaters

    2.3.1 explain why they are used

    2.3.2 describe the method of accessing a repeater.

2.4 Explain the reasons for and use of Q codes and other abbreviations.

2.5 State the reasons for band planning.

2.6 Demonstrate knowledge of the phonetic alphabet and explain why it is used.

2.7 Describe the need for safety precautions in an amateur station.

Syllabus

2.1 Operating procedures in telegraphy, telephony and digital communications: general calls to all stations and calls to specific stations.

2.2 Log-keeping: licence requirements.

2.3 Use of satellites and repeaters: accessing a repeater.

2.4 Reasons for and use of Q codes and other abbreviations.

2.5 Band planning, purposes and advantages.

2.6 The phonetic alphabet, reasons for its use.

2.7 Safety in the amateur station

    2.7.1 precautions recommended by the Radio Society of Great Britain

    2.7.2 reasons why equipment to be repaired should be disconnected from the mains supply and capacitors discharged.
