Receivers

Explanation of question 20

The carrier insertion oscillator in an SSB receiver is to

  1. facilitate receiver calibration
  2. provide a signal to a mixer to generate the intermediate frequency
  3. remove the carrier to give single sideband reception
  4. insert a carrier for the reception of single sideband transmission

The answer is :- 4 In an s.s.b. transmitter, the carrier is suppressed by a balanced modulator. In an s.s.b. receiver the carrier must be re-inserted, and is done by a carrier insertion oscillator.
