Explanation of question 8

A moving coil milliammeter has a resistance of 9 and an f.s.d. of 1mA. When used with a shunt of resistance 1 the instrument will read up to

  1. 11mA
  2. 10mA
  3. 9mA
  4. 1.11mA

The answer is :-

The shunt resistance is one-ninth that of the meter, therfore nine times as much current will flow through the shunt ie 9mA. Thus total current = 9 + 1mA = 10mA
