Explanation of question 24

A sinusoidal voltage is correctly applied to an oscilloscope but the trace is too small. To enlarge the height of this trace, adjustment should be made to the control marked

  1. X-shift
  2. timebase (time/cm)
  3. vertical amplifier (V/cm)
  4. trigger level

The answer is :- 3 For a greater height, greater amplification is required by the vertical amplifier (the Y-amplifier). It is calibrated in volt/cm. The X-shift will move the whole trace horizontally, whilst the time base control enables the time duration of sections of a waveform to be calculated. The trigger level determines the level at which input starts the time base.
